There is nothing more quintessentially Scranton than Valerie Kiser’s Electric City design! It might be the most sought after design at our holiday markets! However, our excitement over Valerie’s work is that she continues to innovate and grow her successful design company, while always staying true to the aesthetic and high-quality that made her name. The Electric City and Globe Store ornaments will surely sell out- make sure to visit her booth at the market early!
When did you start Valerie Kiser Design?
I officially launched Valerie Kiser Design in 2010. My background is a Fiber Artist creating tactile art, textiles and screen printed designs and patterns.
What are you planning to have for sale at ScrantonMade Holiday Market?
This year I am most proud of the collection because it offers unique gifts made locally in Scranton and throughout the United States by skilled craftsmen such as beautiful woven textiles made from 100% cotton grown, spun and woven in America, hand sewn notebook and card covers, greeting card sets, glass ornaments, lux hand-printed, hand-sewn throw pillows and Christmas stockings, and hand-printed clothing that can transition from one season to the next.
Do you have a most popular item with holiday shoppers?
Yes, the Electric City and Globe Store ornaments!
Do you have any new designs or products our readers should know about?
Yes! I am the most excited about this years collection than any other year.
This year I am launching a few new products made in conjunction with two friends and fellow Savannah College Of Art and Design, Fibers Alumni. It’s been really special to work on projects with these ladies almost two decades after we graduated from art school. One friend lives and works in Los Angeles and she helped me to create custom, hand sewn notebook covers and card holders. And the other friend lives in San Fransisco but works for a North Carolina based Mill that creates beautiful hand woven textiles. She continues to help me create beautiful woven pieces from my artwork. And for this years Holiday Market I will have hand woven throw blankets and pillows made from USA grown, spun and woven cotton. They are modern yet timeless and beyond gorgeous!
Another new product I love this year is the greeting card sets. The first set, is my signature Electric City design with a black and white theme. I left it blank to be used in special correspondence throughout the year. The second set, is my Globe Store Christmas design with a black, cream and cranberry theme. I knew I wanted them to be black and cream but the cranberry was a last minute addition and it is my favorite.
You’ve been doing our events since the beginning (over 5 years!). What’s been your biggest or most surprising success over the years?
I have learned to listen to my customers about their wants and needs and at the same time stay true to myself as an artist and designer. I stop trying to please everyone and concentrate on making simple, high quality designs and products that I would personally wear or have in my own space. This helped me to focus on making the better designs and products which led me to find success within an amazingly supportive community.
