Tell us about your background & when you started Susan Estler Jewelry.
My background is visual art. I had attended Parsons School of Design and originally wanted to go into fashion design or illustration but took the safe route and became a graphic designer and did that for many years. Then I switched to the dark side—marketing—when I went into destination marketing and missed expressing myself creatively. The Manatee Art Center in Bradenton, FL started a jewelry program and I thought that was the perfect outlet because I had no expectations of being good at it. It was a great hobby for me because you very much have to be at one with the metal, flame and other equipment. You really have to be “in the now”.
For the longest time I resisted selling my work but as I started developing my skills I thought it selling some work would help to pay for supplies and classes. I love making jewelry with intent which is reflected in my “Intentions” line. Sterling silver earrings with gemstones and other elements hanging from them. Each item has an intention and is printed on a card that is sold along with the earrings. They are affordable but a quality item.
About a year ago I started playing with enamel and I have really loved the versatility of the media blended with my metalsmithing. The first items I created is my “heart” line. They have sold very well and are a spin off of the original hearts I produced in copper. My red heart sells very well but I do have different color variations to choose from.
What are you planning to have at ScrantonMade Holiday Market?
I will have my “Intentions” line for sale as well as my popular hearts in copper and enamel/sterling. My copper bangles are a favorite and a great, affordable gift item. The bangles are hammered copper with sterling silver wrap and a small gemstone on each one. My “Botanical” earrings are an enamel process with photos and a base enamel color. The photos are of different plants we have growing on our farm such as Queen Anne’s Lace. Will have some one-off items and I will also be selling my made-specifically-for-Scranton “Electric City” Necklaces.
Do you have a favorite design for the holiday season?
I love my hearts because each is truly unique and then there is my animal portraits on enamel. When I was in high school and in my 20s I did animal portraits and loved it. I really liked how much people appreciate having a rendering of their pet. I have done several famous horse such as Teddy Jo Mellencamp’s pony “Pig” when she had him boarded just outside of Hilton Head, SC and another horse was an Olympic horse. I recently did a portrait of my horse in graphite and acrylic enamel and really loved doing it so I hope I will be able to do more moving forward. They are set, like the hearts, with sterling silver. A keepsake for sure.
Where else can people find your jewelry?
My jewelry can be found online at SusanEstler.com, and locally at On and On on Capouse Ave and orders for the Electric City Necklaces are being taken with Duffy Accessories on Linden St.
What’s the most exciting things going on with you business right now?
Just the exploration of enamels I would say. It truly is amazing all the different possibilities and I am just beginning. Also as a marketer, I enjoy the ever changing social media platforms and figuring the best way to get the word out about my jewelry.
