The Globe Store is a legend in Scranton. It was the quintessential department store in the romantic sense of the word. The place where everyone shopped with departments lining several floors. A place where people dined at the Charlemont with its famous circular counter and their show tickets at Ticketron maybe also grabbing a piece of chocolate from the candy counter. And this famous department store epitomized Christmastime, for not only Scrantonians, but all northeastern, Pennsylvania. Even for people who are too young to remember the Globe Store, it lives in the stories told by family and friends.
Be sure to catch a horse and carriage ride on First Friday! The rides are provided by Brookvalley Farms and will begin at 5:00 p.m. in front of The Globe.
So when Lackawanna County purchased the building to be the new hub for county offices, it was natural to invest in holiday decorations that would pay homage to Scranton’s past but also recognize Scranton’s bright future. Scranton is once again a lively town with exciting events such as First Friday, new downtown apartments, a reinvigorated mall and unique boutique shops and restaurants lining the streets.
Lackawanna County Commissioners Patrick M. O’Malley, Laureen Cummings and Jerry Notarianni are committed to continuing this revitalization of Scranton and wanted to kick off an exciting holiday shopping season “ Light Up the Globe” when the switch will be pulled to reveal the building decorations.
The public is invited to come for the ceremony which kicks at 4:45 p.m. with some holiday DJ music followed by The Knight Rhythms of Scranton High singing seasonal songs. Unico Scranton Chapter will be providing free hot chocolate, and the Commissioners will welcome everyone at 5:15 p.m.
At 5:30 p.m. the switch will be turned on followed by closing carols by The Valley View Voices of the Valley. Brooke Valley Horse and Carriage will be on site to offer horse drawn carriage rides after the ceremony and everyone is encouraged to check out the Holiday Market inside the Globe and walk around Scranton for First Friday.
Beginning at 5:00 p.m., horse and carriage rides will be available $5 per person on 1st Friday in front of the Globe provided by Brookvalley Farms.
