That’s why this year we booked “the funkiest tribute in show business” – The James Brown Dance Party – for our headlining act !!! With an all-star lineup and an ever-changing groovy set list , they promise that by the end of Lackawanna Arts Fest, we’ll all be dancing like no one’s watching! They take the stage at 6pm and you definitely won’t want to miss it!
Tell us a little about how The James Brown Dance Party got its start. Who is in the lineup?
My brother and I (Adam & Matthew Chase) have always been huge fans of James Brown and throughout our careers have paid tribute to his music in various forms. We decided in January of 2015 to throw a James Brown Dance Party and include a bunch of our favorite musicians. We had so much fun that we decided to make it something deeper.
Lackawanna Arts Fest Lineup:
Matthew Chase (The Chase Brothers)
Chris Rob (Talib Kweli, Craig Robinson’s Nasty Delicious)
Felix Pastorius (Mike Clark, Jeff Coffin)
Justin Stanton (Snarky Puppy)
Sly5thAve (Prince, Ghost Note)
Adam Dotson (Rubblebucket)
Cory Baker (Juno What?)
Where is the band from?
Technically, there is not a solid home base for the band as the musicians involved are from all over the world, however this particular incarnation of the band is based in NYC and Baltimore.
What can attendees expect from “the funkiest tribute in show business”?
The James Brown Dance Party brings an authentic groove based approach to the music. The goal is to celebrate the music, allow the all-star musicians to shine and have everyone in the audience dance from the first note till the last. The shows get so funky they often end with everyone dancing like no one is looking.
Do you have any favorite songs that you expect to be in the set?
We always work on balancing playing the hits and bringing some of the many funky gems and deep cuts of JB to life. I personally love playing the song “Superbad” so there’s a good chance that will be in the setlist.
Is there anything else you’d like our readers to know?
We’ve been blessed to be embraced by the James Brown family and all the musicians associated with the band. We toured with Clyde Stubblefield before he passed and have had Fred Wesley, Fred Thomas, Mousey Thompson, Jeff Watkins and so many other JB players join us for these events. We honor James Brown and his musicians that paved the way for “funk” music in everything we do with this project. These shows are true celebrations. Come party with us!
