Tell us a little bit about the beginnings of Variant Creative.
I’ve always had a passion for both film and design, so after years working for various film companies and ad agencies I finally decided to combine those two loves and launch Variant. My primary focus is crafting posters for independent filmmakers and distributors, but I’ve also begun creating alternate posters for some of my favorite movies.
How did you get your start doing poster design for independent film?
Most of my adult life I’ve had a hand in making movies or advertising, but my first official movie poster was back in 2006. I had just directed a horror short film called OF DARKNESS and we needed a poster for festivals. We didn’t have any money, so I decided to put one together myself and I was hooked. A couple of years later, my buddy Ben Hickernell made an indie movie called LEBANON, PA. and after finding out the film would be premiering at SXSW, he asked me to do the key art. That was my first paid gig and the first time I thought this could actually be a career path. After that, I was fortunate to have a lot of friends in the indie film scene and that really helped push things forward.
What is the coolest thing you’ve ever worked on?
Oh boy, this is a tough question. I’ve had the great fortune of working on a ton of cool projects and collaborating with so many wonderful filmmakers, so it’s tough to pick a favorite. I will say, I was lucky enough to create the festival poster for RAIDERS! A documentary about three 11 year olds who did a shot for shot remake of Raiders of the Lost Ark back in the 80s. That is an awesome movie and I had a ton of fun making the poster.
What are you currently working on?
On the client side, I’m currently working on posters for KEEP QUIET, a documentary focusing on an anti-Semitic far-right politician’s transformation after discovering he is Jewish, DO NOT RESIST which looks at the militarization of policing in America, and THE USA/UFO NATIONAL DEFENSE TEST, which is a sci-fi mockumentary. In my spare time, I’m working on alternate posters for POLTERGEIST and THE LOST BOYS, a macro photo series celebrating the work of the Coen brothers and my first tee design for STAR WARS.
