Artist Spotlight: Stonecold Designz

July 18, 2018 By: Chrissy Manuelcomment

Tammy of Stonecold Designz re-purposes, reuses and recreates the old into new rustic industrial upcycled lights and more.  Using rustic hardware, reclaimed wood, barnwood and iron pipe, she creates unique pieces that are a work of art! She’ll be featuring her lights, candles, and etched stones at Lackawanna Arts Fest!

Tell us a little about how Stonecold Designz got its start.

One day I was scrolling through Pinterest and came upon a light that was made from pipe fittings. I just loved the look of the light and its uniqueness and thought that I could build something like that. So off to the hardware store I went to gather my supplies that I would need to create my first light. It was a very enjoyable process and creative outlet at the same time. One design soon became two designs and it was not long after… that StoneCold Designz was formed. I have shipped lights across the US and as far as France and Europe.

What types of items do you make?

The main item that I create is lights. Those consist of anything from lamps to hanging lights and everything in between. I have also integrated sandblasting into the process, which allows me to etch the glass with designs and truly create an original piece.

I addition to the etching of the glass I also offer sand carved stones and just finished a project for the American Legion to honor our Veterans.

Tell us a little about your upcycling process.

I like to have at least one component that has been salvaged, in the design of my lights. I use a lot of recycled whiskey bottles, that I cut and polish to use as shades. Flea markets are also great for finding little treasures that can be upcycled into a functioning light…with a little thought. Gears that were once on a piece of farm equipment and switches from an alarm have all found their way into the designs of my lights.  I have a great network of family and friends that keep me supplied with items that they think I might be able to use.

Most of the lights that I create have the bottoms cut off the bottle, so to further upcycle the remaining portion I have started making soy candles in the bottoms and have added them as an addition line.

What will you be featuring at Lackawanna Arts Fest?

The items that I will be displaying consist of lamps, sconces, and a few pendants. I will have some Steampunk styled lamps, whiskey bottle lamps and lights that have been created around an upcycled item. I will also have a few sandblasted etched lamps and stones as well as some hand poured soy candles.

Is there anything else you would like our readers to know?

I do a lot of custom orders and I am always looking for unique finds to create my lights. All my lights are customizable to fit the need of the consumer. Some people would like to build their own light, so I have started offering pre-cut or pre-drilled bottles in a kit to be assembled by the purchaser.
