Second Banana is an art collective that specializes in hand screened patches, tote bags, buttons and more with artwork that is self-described as “a little sassy, dark, and definitely full of attitude.” Their playful & irreverent nod to the 80’s and 90’s will delight those with a love for the eras. We are excited to have them at Lackawanna Arts Fest for the first time!
First of all, who is Second Banana and when did you start?
Second Banana is a quirky art collective started in November 2017 by Jess Meoni and Victoria Wright, both Masters’ graduates of Maywood University. Majoring in graphic design, we took elements of what we learned in college to pursue our dream of starting our own flair company.
What types of items do you make?
We hand screen print patches and tote bags, and design our own stickers, buttons, embroidery hoops, and prints. Our phrasing tends to be a little sassy, dark, and definitely full of attitude.
You seem to have an appreciation for art that is literally made by hand – patches, zines and was so popular in the 1990’s. You’ve even referenced 90’s lyrics in some of your work. Where does that interest come from?
I think we have a passion for nostalgia and we cling to things we grew up with. Also, the process of conceptualizing and screen printing is super interesting. It’s really cool to watch an illustration change mediums, going from a drawing, to a digital file, to printed on fabric.
What will you be featuring at Lackawanna Arts Fest?
At the festival, we have a table setup featuring a variety of patches in all different colors, a few styles of tote bags, buttons, stickers, prints, and more. I think we’re also trying for small tapestries as well.
What’s next for Second Banana?
We’re trying out layering colors on our designs to add more depth and interesting patterns.
Is there anything else you would like our readers to know?
We have no machinery and do all this by hand! It can be really tedious, but it’s rewarding.
