Mason J.A.R. Apparel has something for all of the artsy & green mommies and daddies (and of course their little sprouts)! Artist Jessica Ann Russell is the designer behind this colorful line of block printed designs on organic fabric.
How did you start Mason J.A.R. Apparel?
Mason J.A.R. Apparel was started in 2011 when my first son was around two years old, beginning with a small table show hosted by a mom’s club in our hometown of Bethlehem PA. with only a few printed pieces. The business name is a combination of both my first son’s name (Mason) and my initials (JAR).
What inspired its start?
I was looking for a way to get back into doing my own artwork. It only seemed natural to apply my knowledge of fabric printing to children’s clothing. Now having a little sprout, my focus was also on finding healthy and stylish options for him. Which is why we choose to go organic.
How did you get into block printing?
My father taught my sister and I how to carve blocks in grade school. We used our first blocks to create a mural on my sisters bedroom wall ( I still have two of the blocks ). In high school I applied the skills he taught me for a job as a printer for a company that created beautiful textiles.
Do you have a background in the arts?
I graduated from Pennsylvania School of Art and Design and The School of Visual Arts where I majored in both children’s book illustration and textile design.
