Lyndsey Hughes is a talented NEPA artist and illustrator that is best known for her art nouveau watercolors but she has also ventured into coloring books, and putting her hand-drawn and digital illustrations on a variety of fun products! We are excited to have her at Lackawanna Arts Fest this year!
Tell us a little about your background and how you became an artist.
I am a mother of 2, and have spent my whole life here in NEPA. I have always liked making things. The medium has never really mattered. While I usually stick to painting in some form, I have recently started working digitally, and have ventured into knitting, repurposing old furniture, really just doing anything to create something.
When did you start Lyndsey Hughes Designs and Illustrations?
I got into coloring books about 2 years ago. It has been a fun, but surprisingly painstaking journey for someone who loves to play with colors.
How would you describe your work?
My work is a little all over the map. I love watercolor painting, and usually do them in an art nouveau/ art deco style. I love those styles because they were flashy just for the sake of being flashy. My stickers and vinyl decals are a little more pop culture and tongue in cheek. While I love my fancy paintings, I still like being a little bit of a smart aleck.
How did you get into designing coloring books?
My favorite part of creating anything, is playing with color. I had always enjoyed coloring books as a kid, and I wanted a quick way to get right to the fun part as an adult. I searched the coloring books available, but none really stood out and made me say “Yeah! I’m going to color the heck out of that!”. So my husband asked me why haven’t I just made my own. So, I did.
What will you be featuring at Lackawanna Arts Fest?
There will be a broad collection of things. Vinyl decals, decorated mugs and water bottles, hand painted print glasses, original paintings, coloring books, and art prints.
What types of custom work do you do?
I haven’t really ventured into custom works yet. I have done a few requests for personalized water bottles, but it has been on a very small scale.
