Meet Jessica of j. Crane Jewelry. She specializes in jewelry crafted from metal that has been textured, pierced, polished or enameled. And, her hand stamped copper sprout garden markers are the nicest things we’ve ever seen to add to our garden pots.
Tell us a little about how j. Crane Jewelry got its start.
I grew up right here in the Scranton area and have always been crafty with a love of making decorative things. Throughout my childhood, one of the crafts that I enjoyed most was making jewelry. I made necklaces and bracelets out of handmade paper beads, sculpted shapes for pendants out of Fimo, painted wooden beads for necklaces. I liked the small scale of jewelry, being able to make tiny pieces of art to carry and wear.
I attended Marywood University where I took my first metalsmithing course and never looked back. Working in metal fascinated me, it can transform in so many ways in terms of shape, texture and finish. Making jewelry fulfilled my desire to create on a small scale while making wearable pieces of art. I graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Fine Art and a concentration specifically in metalsmithing and jewelry design.
After graduating, I got a day job and occasionally made jewelry for myself, as gifts and for friends and family, but creating unfortunately fell to the wayside. When the recession came, I lost my job because of the downturn in the economy. It was then that I decided it was time to return to my craft, make use of my time and education and start creating things again. I built up a small stock of jewelry, set up my Etsy shop and j Crane was started.
Do you have a favorite design or piece?
My Scoop earrings have always been a favorite for me because it was one of the first metal designs that I created. I feel like the design options for Scoop jewelry is endless so I never tire of making them or coming up with new ways to wear them. They are also my favorite pieces to wear because they are so versatile.
What will you be featuring at Arts on the Square?
For AOTS, I will have my regular jewelry designs, which are mostly necklaces and earrings, but I will also have a few new designs that I have not yet offered in my Etsy shop, including some new Scoop Rings and some new earring designs that I’m really excited about.
I will also have lots of my Sprout Herb Garden Markers stamped with a variety of plant names, hopefully capturing a little something from everyone’s gardens.
What inspires your work?
I’m inspired by simple shapes, intricate patterns and the way that just a line can define something beautiful.
