Each year, The Big Three (Scranton Cultural Center, Everhart Museum, and Lackawanna County Library System) collaborate to bring art installations & performances to Arts on the Square. This year, festival-goers can enjoy a mini-performance of Hairspray Jr. by the Cultural Center, kid’s activities by the Library and experience the Everhart Museum On-The-Road! It’s sure to be fun for the kiddos and adults alike!
What is the Scranton Cultural Center planning for this year’s Arts on the Square?
Talented, young performers from our summer camp program will be at Arts on the Square to offer a sneak peek performance of our upcoming production of Hairspray Jr! Our students have been rehearsing diligently for this fun show and cannot wait to share this incredible story of diversity, dancing and love with the community!
What kind of kid’s activities is the library planning?
The library will be using our Summer Reading Club theme which is “Build A Better World.” We will be bringing Duplo LEGO blocks (which are the bigger ones) that kids can come and build with. We also will be doing sidewalk chalk art and have a story or two also dealing with the theme.
We’ve heard that the Everhart is taking its museum on the road (and to Arts on the Square) this year. Tell us a little bit about that.
Our Everhart Museum “On the Road” is a S.T.E.A.M. (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) based program we take out to community centers and schools during the year. Our most recent package is all about the Science of Superheroes. Do superpowers exist in real life? We will be doing short demos of the Science of Superheroes at Arts on the Square this year to explain how powers of superheroes can and do exist. We will be looking at examples of biomimicry, camouflage, jet propulsion, structure, tension and tensile strength. We will be launching three new “On the Road” themes for the Fall of 2017 and Spring of 2018.
When can the community see the full Hairspray Jr production at the Cultural Center?
The Scranton Cultural Center’s production of Hairspray Jr. will be presented on Friday, August 4th at 7:00pm and Saturday, August 5th at 11:00am. Tickets are only $5 and can be purchased at the Fidelity Box Office, located in the main lobby of the SCC!
Why do you think it’s important to be part of events such as Arts on the Square?
We (Scranton Cultural Center) love giving our students a chance to showcase their work to the community. Our students come from all over the NEPA area to perform in our program. We love being at Arts on the Square to remind the community of how important arts education is to our kids!
