We could not be more excited about our headlining act, Start Making Sense: Talking Heads Tribute! Everyone loves Talking Heads and this act encompasses all of the energy and stage presence of the legendary band! Expect fan favorites like “Burning Down The House” and “Once in a Lifetime” as well as lesser known songs that are sure to keep that party vibe going. They take the stage at 6:30pm! You definitely don’t want to miss it!
How did Start Making Sense come about?
We have this great bar in Bethlehem, PA called The Funhouse. Some of us have been playing there for 20+ years and it’s kind of our home base. Anyway, a few of the folks in SMS had finished up playing a night of The Who and Led Zeppelin covers when the owner, Tina, said they should pick another band to cover the following month. After throwing around some ideas, Tina suggested Talking Heads. We put together a 9-piece band with the intention of doing one show, one night, for our own enjoyment and the amusement of our friends. 8 years later, here we are….
What can our festival-goers expect from your live set?
Lots of dancing!! Our show is very high energy and the crowd always gets in on the party. They’ll be plenty of hits and songs you know, mixed in with some of weirder deep-cuts for the hardcore Talking Heads fans. But this music is so fun, even if you don’t know every song, you’ll still have a good time!
We’ve yet to have the privilege to see Start Making Sense live but have heard that the band’s performance really encompasses the feel of Talking Heads. How seriously do you study the band and do you incorporate stage moves, costume, etc. into the performance?
We’ve spent a lot of time studying all aspects of Talking Heads. Since this project started, it’s kind of ever-evolving musically. As we discover different live versions, or demos of songs, we’ll work those ideas and arrangements into our show. We actually recreated the “Stop Making Sense” film this past September in Bethlehem, PA with all the costumes, choreography, moving risers, the whole thing! When touring, depending on the venue and space, we try to incorporate as much of that show as we can into what we do.

Do you have a favorite song to perform? Is there an audience favorite?
The answer to this question, for me, is always changing. I’ve always been a big fan of the song “What A Day That Was.” Also, the hits: “Burning Down The House” and “Once in a Lifetime” get a great crowd reaction, so those are definitely fun to play.
We know you hail from Bethlehem. How far geographically has the band taken you?
Over the years we’ve been fortunate enough to take this band all over the place!! We travel from Florida to Canada, New York to Colorado and every where in between on a regular basis
How often do you perform in NEPA?
NEPA was one of the first areas we played when we took this band outside of our hometown. Tom Moran at the River Street Jazz Cafe has always been great to us and brought us to the Jazz Cafe real early on. We still play there at least twice a year.
