Rogue Chimp played the very first Arts on the Square and we are excited to have them back this year! They describe themselves as “progressive fusion” and we’d describe them as a band puts a smile on everyone’s faces and make them wanna dance! The band may dazzle serious music fans with the array of styles and influences they bring to the music but everyone listening is sure to have fun! Check them out on July 29th at AOTS!
Can you describe your music for our readers?
We call our style of music “progressive fusion” which is really a way to say we have taken elements from lots of different types of music and have fused it into something new! We have elements of rock, funk, techno, jazz, classical, world, drum n bass, and sometimes this is all mixed up into one song!
Who is in your lineup and what other projects are the members involved in?
Rogue Chimp is made up of Mark Woodyatt on electric violin / synths, Jon Ventre on bass, Zach Cole on Keys / synths, and Jacob Cole on drums / percussion. Mark, Jon and I (Jacob) are full time musicians, playing various gigs and teaching. Jon plays bass with local blues legend Clarence Spady, Mark and I (Jacob) have an acoustic side project thats very different from Rogue Chimp which we call “Handpan & Violin” performing my handpan compositions with Mark playing violin along with them! Zach owns a flooring business,Zach Cole Flooring.
You have gone from young musicians to now some of you having young families of your own. How has the band evolved as the members lives have changed?
Yes its true, the band Rogue Chimp has been around in some form for over a decade now!! Wow! I think we have evolved as individuals and as musicians over the years, for the better. Yes Zach has a fast growing family and I just had my 1st child as you know! So finding time for practice is a little harder at the moment!
What else is on the summer schedule?
Next up after AOTS Rogue Chimp will be playing at the Bog in Scranton for the Scranton Jazz festival on 8/5/17 at 10pm. Then 8/30/17 we play in Clarks Summit for the Hillside Park summer concert series 6pm-dusk. Then we will be performing 9pm on 1/1/17 at La Festa, and the next night 1/2/17 at Mountain Sky for Satellite Ranch Music & Arts festival!
Do you have any advice for young musicians who want to make a career out of music?
My advice to young musicians is to do what you love, do what makes you happy, do what inspires you, and the rest will fall into place.
