Tell us a little about Grupo Zona.
Grupo Zona is a local Hispanic music group that plays a mix of popular Latin music such as salsa, merengue, and bachata. We bring the upbeat, tropical sounds of the Caribbean to Northeast Pennsylvania! There are a total of four, and at times, five total members in our group. Jose plays the güira (sounds like gwee-dah), a percussion instrument that sounds like a maraca. Tomas plays the tambora, a popular drum of the Caribbean. Carlos is the back-up singer. Cesar Reyes-Mateo is the lead singer. Our fifth member, Annael, who we only get the privilege of having him play with us when we perform events during the day, as he is only 5 years old. He is the youngest son of Tomas and also plays the güira. He has been such a huge hit with our fans and a welcome addition to our band!
How long have you been playing in the Scranton area?
Grupo Zona is a fairly new band in the local area. Although we have been playing under a different name since around the year 2010, Grupo Zona is now under new management and has been playing together for a total of about two years. We currently perform in the Wilkes-Barre, Hazleton, Allentown, and Scranton areas. We have also performed at local colleges, for various festivals and community events, and for private wedding receptions.
Why do you like playing festivals and community events such as AOTS?
We love sharing our culture with the local community. It is such a great feeling to see that our music puts a smile on so many faces. People walk past our stage with the beat of the music in their steps or they turn into full-fledged dancing. Our music is so contagious! It’s almost like being at a Caribbean resort.
Is there anything else you would like our readers to know?
We would like to encourage readers to come out to the Arts on the Square on July 29th, bring your dancing shoes and join in on the fun!
