Artist Devon O’Keefe creates fantasy, earthy and nature-themed work. His paintings explore both the dark and light sides of nature. This prolific artist works not only in fine art, but tattooing, murals and book illustrations. We can’t wait to see his work in person at this year’s Arts on the Square!
Tell us a little about yourself as an artist and your artistic background.
Painting is my way of studying the earth, and fulfilling a desire of the contemplative consciousness. Creation groans with all of its beauty and chaos, and I feel an almost urgent need to study it as an extension of my own hand – of my own paintbrush. I am in a constant state of searching and discovering, and learning and teaching, all of which break through the surfaces of my work at different peaks, like a mountain chain only seen from above the clouds.
My work often displays common themes, of which are naturally imposed, that seem to carry with them a dark side as well as a light side. One must explore both extremes in order to create work that is not only an extension of one’s own experiences, but also a look into the uncertain.
My style of work can be vastly different at times, very much depending on my current observations, whether spiritual, social, or environmental, but the technique and process remain rather consistent.
What medium(s) do you work in?
I work primarily in watercolor, but almost as much oil and acrylic, and I tattoo as well.
What are your favorite subjects? What inspires you?
I love painting anything fantasy, earthy, and nature themed. I illustrate biblical themes often, as well as anything very imaginative.
Do you take commissions? If so do you have a favorite piece you have worked on?
I primarily do commissioned paintings, either for private collectors, offices, lobbies, gifts, or churches. I also do a lot of custom murals, book illustrations, and glow in the dark paintings. One of my favorite commissioned pieces was a 5ft x 4ft acrylic painting of the Little Prince, now resting in Texas.
