Colleen of Sea Hags has a long history of creating natural, high quality soaps and products that can be used on people and animals alike. Started in 2001, this natural soap company offers both vegan and goats milk options. Their storefront is located in Brackney, PA and we are excited they are heading to Scranton for Arts on the Square.
We love your business name! Tell us a little about the name and how you started your business.
I named this company after an old boat we had that we named Sea Hag in the 1980’s. We thought it was a funny name for a little boat on a local lake. I designed the logo of a happy laughing Sea Hag when we needed a name for some of the soaps I had started to make. I had learned to make soap in 1995 at a workshop I organized at the local Choconut elementary grammar school with friends. The experience was basic soap making using animal fats. I loved the process but I didn’t care for the smell of the animal fats. I started exploring soaps made with vegetable fats like olive oil, coconut oil and other vegetable fats. I documented every recipe and learned what worked and what didn’t work until it got consistent. In 1998, we bought an old 1920’s hay barn in NEPA. and started to restore it with a local timber framer by the name of John McNamara, to use it for a studio. I thought I’d sell a few soaps and create some art here. I had an open barn holiday show in 1999 and invited 500 people and I think they all came! I had no intention of going into retail but after showing local talents and my soaps I thought ,”why not have a shop since I’d be here all the time anyways.”
What makes your products unique?
We’ve been in business for over 17 years and have been able to make our soaps with consistent quality and a very loyal customer base that won’t use anything else. We make three different recipes: 1. A vegan soap, 2. a goat milk soap and 3. a cocoa butter soap. They are all made with vegetable fats rather than animal fats. Our natural bug spray has been a big hit made with essential oils. It’s a great tick deterrent and outdoor hikers, golfers, gardeners are very happy with the scent and it’s performance. We’ve added in the last year a natural SPF 38 lip balm in a few different scents. Our other products include Hag Balm for working hands, rooms sprays, sugar scrubs and more.
What products will you be featuring at AOTS?
All of them. You can see them all on our web site. Our pet line is safe for pets and humans; I’ve bathed my Goldendoodle “Grace” in our Saving Grace cocoa butter soap that I drilled out and have a loop to put around your wrist so you don’t drop it while bathing your best friend. I’ve bathed and shampooed both of us in the lake close by, which is fun because the soap is biodegradable. Our Hag Balm is safe for pets too. We make a room spray that freshens up pet beds and areas too.
